Los Altos is a small city comprised of mostly residential properties surrounding several business districts containing retail and office spaces.

The area was originally part of the Ohlone Indian territory and became part of two Mexican land grants in the early 1800's for ranches that lasted for nearly 100 years. The land was purchased in 1907 by the Southern Pacific Railway as part of the railway between San Jose and San Francisco. Paul Shoup, the President of the Southern Pacific Railway, formed the Los Altos Land Company and began developing the immediate area around University Avenue. The area began growing and was finally incorporated in 1952. Four years later, Los Altos Hills incorporated also. See the website of the Los Altos History Museum for a more detailed history.

Currently the city is under a constant state of redevelopment with homes being remodeled and rebuilt, along with five distinctive business districts spread throughout the city limits. The Los Altos Village Association and the Chamber of Commerce has detailed information about these districts.
